With 60 school and activity buses to maintain, and to create routes to accommodate approximately 2,000 student riders each day, Dare County Schools Transportation staff are busy.
In 2013, for the fourth time in five years, North Carolina's Pupil Transportation Association recognized Dare County Schools Transportation Department for earning the best bus inspection rating in one of three regions statewide. For the past eight years, Dare County's ranking has been among the top three in the Northeast Region.

Bus drivers are responsible for safely transporting children to and from school as well as field trips. School bus drivers are paid $17.50/hour. They receive $10.50/day for attendance and $100/month for perfect attendance. Routes are anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours daily with the most experienced drivers on the longest routes. Subs are also needed and used on a daily basis. All licensing fees are reimbursed for permanent and substitute school bus drivers.
Activity bus drivers are paid $15.97/hour and are responsible for transporting sports teams to locations through out Eastern NC. Activity bus drivers can drive school buses also.
