Manteo Middle School took a proactive approach to promote safety and community spirit during Safe Schools Week, engaging students in meaningful activities designed to foster connection and appreciation within the school environment. Under the guidance of Carrie Houseknecht, the SAVE Promise Club sponsor, students participated in a variety of events throughout the week.
One of the highlights of the week was a dedicated table set up in the cafeteria, where students were encouraged to express their thoughts on what makes them happy about Manteo Middle School. Armed with colorful post-it notes, students wrote heartfelt messages, creating a vibrant display that showcased the positive aspects of their school community.
In another engaging activity, students reached out to trusted adults via email to express their gratitude. This initiative not only encouraged students to reflect on the support they receive from faculty and staff but also reinforced the importance of appreciation in building a healthy school environment. As a token of gratitude for their efforts, each participating student received a fidget spinner pencil, generously donated by the Outer Banks Hotline.
The SAVE Promise Club's commitment to creating a supportive atmosphere has not gone unnoticed. Recently, the club was awarded a $500 grant from the National SAVE Organization, an acknowledgment of their dedication to ensuring that no child feels isolated or alone. This achievement will be featured in the organization's upcoming November newsletter, highlighting the activities undertaken during Just Say Hello Week.
"The mission of the SAVE Promise Club is to cultivate a sense of belonging and community among our students," said Houseknecht. "Through these activities, we aim to remind everyone that they are not alone and that there is always someone who cares." As Safe Schools Week came to a close, Manteo Middle School emerged with a renewed sense of unity, proving that simple acts of kindness and appreciation can create a lasting impact on the school community.
