Students from Manteo High School’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) have transformed a community crosswalk into a vibrant work of art with their “Under the Sea” design.

The crosswalk, located on E Bonnett Street near Dowdy Park and Nags Head Elementary School, was made possible through a collaboration with the Town of Nags Head and the Arts and Cultural Committee. By combining creativity with community service, the crosswalk project not only beautifies the area but also enhances pedestrian safety, as studies show that artistic crosswalks draw greater attention to crossings.

The first phase of the crosswalk design took place on Nov. 22. NAHS members completed the finishing details on Nov. 29. This project was led by NAHS co-sponsors Holly Gottenborg, photography teacher, and Jillion Metzinger, art teacher at Manteo High School. “As an art teacher, I’m incredibly proud of our National Art Honor Society students for using their artistic talents to contribute to the community,” said NAHS co-sponsor Holly Gottenborg. “Painting this crosswalk in Nags Head showcases their creativity while making a lasting impact by enhancing public spaces and bringing art into everyday life.”

As members of the NAHS, students are required to complete 15 service hours annually while maintaining good academic standing. This project allowed students to fulfill their service requirements while making a lasting impact on their community. This is the second cohort of National Art Honor Society members at Manteo High School.
