The Knights of Columbus’ Least Among My Brethren (LAMB) program generously donated $9,400 to support special education students in Dare County Schools.

On Jan. 26, representatives from Dare County Schools, Currituck County Schools and Dare County Special Olympics were recognized during a ceremony hosted by the Knights of Columbus at Holy Redeemer Church in Kitty Hawk. During the event, Knights of Columbus members presented Dare County Schools with a $9,400 donation to support students in the district’s exceptional children program. The ceremony highlighted the mission of the LAMB program, a statewide Knights of Columbus initiative established in 1974 to support individuals with learning differences through charitable fundraising.

With support from community members and local businesses, the Knights of Columbus’ fundraising efforts generated nearly $19,000 overall. Proceeds will directly benefit special education students in Dare County Schools, Currituck County Schools and Dare County Special Olympics.

“We are grateful for the Knights of Columbus and the work they do for our students with special needs,” said Dr. Reida Roberts, director of exceptional children’s services for Dare County Schools.

The donation will allow exceptional children teachers to enhance specialized programming and expand instructional resources to better meet students’ individual needs.

During the ceremony, the Knights of Columbus also presented Cape Hatteras Secondary School Exceptional Children Teacher Jen Bonanni and her husband, Scott, with the Kevin McGrath Memorial Award. This award is in recognition of their continued dedication to the LAMB program and their ongoing fundraising efforts and support of exceptional children on Hatteras Island and across North Carolina.

The mission of Dare County Schools’ Exceptional Children’s Department is to equip students with the education and skills they need to live independently and succeed in college or a career. The department provides individualized educational services designed to meet the unique needs of students with learning challenges.
