First Flight Middle School’s Future City team, “Frayden,” earned the Best Integrated Water and Food Recycling System Award for its innovative city design in this year’s statewide competition.

This year’s theme, “Farm to Table,” challenged students to design a futuristic city that eliminates food waste throughout the supply chain while keeping citizens healthy and safe.

The Future City Competition is traditionally held on the campus of North Carolina State University, but this year’s event was canceled due to two winter snowstorms. Student projects were still evaluated along with a videotaped presentation, and Frayden’s design stood out for its creativity, problem-solving and engineering innovation.

The Future City Competition is a project-based STEM program for students in grades 6-8. Teams collaborate with educators and mentors to imagine cities 100 years into the future and develop solutions to real-world sustainability challenges.

First Flight Middle School and Dare County Schools are proud of this outstanding group of future engineers and innovators.

The team is coached by First Flight Middle School Career and Technical Education teachers Liz Gray and Brandon Woods.
