The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has shared that Canvas is safe to use again following the recent statewide outage. A cybersecurity review from a third-party found no evidence of ongoing issues or threats within the system.
As a result, Canvas services will return to normal operations today at 4 p.m., including student and staff access through NCEdCloud.
The cybersecurity breach involved unauthorized access to limited account information, such as usernames, email addresses, course names, enrollment details and messages. There is currently no evidence that course materials, student work, grades or passwords were affected. Student ID and social security numbers are not stored in Canvas and were not exposed during the breach.
We encourage staff and students to remain vigilant regarding potential phishing attempts or suspicious communications, which increase immediately following a cybersecurity event.
Reminders from DCS Department of Technology:
- Dare County Schools will never ask for passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes, or sensitive personal information through email or text messages.
- Do not click links or download attachments from unexpected messages, even if they appear urgent.
- Verify suspicious communications by contacting your child’s school or the district directly using official contact information. Suspicious messages often originate from an unknown number or email, include misspellings or poor grammar, and have links that do not match official district or school websites.
- Be cautious of messages creating panic, urgency, or threats of account closure.
NCDPI and the Dare County Schools Technology team will continue monitoring the system closely and will provide updates if any new concerns arise.
