Students at Cape Hatteras Elementary School enjoyed a special visit from children’s author Ginjer L. Clarke on Friday, April 17, 2026.

Clarke, known for her science-focused nonfiction books about animals, led three engaging sessions for different grade levels. During her presentations, she shared insights into her books, the writing process, and how she finds inspiration for her stories.

Thanks to the support of the Cape Hatteras Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), every student received a signed copy of one of Clarke’s latest books, Totally Turtles.

Cape Hatteras Elementary students left the sessions with a deeper understanding of both the animal world and the work involved in writing, editing, and publishing a book.

“Bringing authors into our school is something that I am very passionate about. When students can meet and talk to the person who wrote a book they read, it makes reading feel more personal and really gets them excited about the books they are reading,” said Cape Hatteras Elementary Media Coordinator Jenn Augustson. “Ms. Clarke’s visit helped to show our students that they, too, could become authors one day and hopefully planted the seeds of creativity and curiosity about the natural world.”

Dare County Schools extends its appreciation to Jenn Augustson for organizing this educational opportunity, as well as the CHES PTO for making it possible for each student to take home a book.
