Student Meal Program

About the Student Meal Program

The United States Department of Agriculture has extended the waiver granted to North Carolina Public Schools to allow schools to continue participating in the Summer Nutrition Program through December 31, 2020. This means that every child 18 years or younger that lives in Dare County will be eligible to receive a meal at no cost from any of the following meal sites.

Meals will continue to be provided at the sites below on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. Meals are sanitized and packed for easy pickup at designated school locations. We will continue to provide meals at no cost to students enrolled in Dare County Schools during this time.

Meal Schedule

"Grab and Go" no-contact procedures will be in place at these locations Tuesday and Thursday of each week.  Meals will be packaged to cover breakfast and lunch over multiple days.  (Thursday's meal pick up will provide lunch for that day, plus breakfast and lunch for Friday and Monday, and breakfast for Tuesday the following week. Tuesday's meal pick up will include lunch for that day plus, breakfast and lunch for Wednesday and breakfast for Thursday.)

Locations

Main Site Locations:
  • Cape Hatteras Elementary: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Manteo Elementary: 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • First Flight Elementary: 11:00 - 12:30 pm (Meals are located in the bus parking lot.)

Our community partners, The Beach Food Pantry and Food for Thought, will distribute weekend meals on Thursdays.

Dare County School Nutrition Services are committed to keep our children well-nourished during these difficult times.  We are developing plans for continued meal service during the 2020-21 school year.  An announcement will be made detailing our plans for school meal service beyond August 31st once USDA and NCDPI announces updated federal rules.

Contact School Nutrition Director, Kelleta Govan with questions and for more information.

Dare County Schools is providing meals to all children in Dare County, age 18 and under. Recently, the district modified the days of the week that meals are distributed. However, families can still receive meals to cover breakfast and lunch for all five days of the week.
