John Buford
First Flight High and Middle School chorus performs.

Nearly 100 choristers will join onstage for First Flight Schools’ annual choral concert on October 22 at 6pm. The concert titled ‘Harmonies of Hope’ will celebrate cancer survivors and reflect their musical director’s own cancer journey.

First Flight High School's chorus director, John Buford, is inviting cancer survivors to join him for a special concert on October 22. After a year-long battle with cancer, Buford is excited to return to the stage for the event.

"After our time apart, the students and I agreed that our October concert needed to be something truly meaningful," said Buford. "We wanted to musically celebrate life and all its beauty."

The concert titled “Harmonies of Hope” is about celebrating life, strength, and resilience. "It's a way to express gratitude and hope, both for myself and for the many other cancer survivors in our community," he added.

The concert will feature a mix of songs inspired by survivor themes, reflecting on beauty, strength, happiness, hope, love, and the best of life. Buford hopes the event will provide a sense of community and inspiration to all attendees.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the support I received from my school, community, and the medical community during my treatment," said Buford. "This concert is a way to show my appreciation and to bring people together."

The Outer Banks Hospital will be on-site to provide information about local cancer care and support services. There will also be special gifts for cancer survivors and a reception sponsored by Manteo and First Flight Lions Clubs following the concert.

The concert will take place 6pm October 22 at the David E. Oaksmith Auditorium at First Flight High School. Choristers from both First Flight High and Middle Schools will join together on stage for the performance.
